Mad Anthony sketch

Who is "Mad Anthony"??

General Anthony Wayne was a dashing, brave soldier who was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army by President George Washington, with whom he had served the harsh winter at Valley Forge. Anthony Wayne is said to be “without a doubt the General Schwartzkopf of his day.” Congress unanimously awarded Wayne with a gold medal commemorative of his gallant service. He was assigned to Fort Hamilton in 1791.

Because he was a meticulous dresser, Wayne was nicknamed “Dandy” before he was ever called “Mad”. He was known for his military genius, his ability to inspire loyalty among his men, his bravery—and his quick temper. Indian scouts called him, “the Chief who never sleeps.” Some say he earned the “Mad” moniker with his impetuous nature. Others say it began when one of his spies--sentenced by Wayne to receive “29 lashes across the back for his (unruly) behavior”-- exclaimed, “Anthony is mad, stark mad!” and yelled, “Mad Anthony Wayne!” over and over again.
